Analysis on Swift’s Attitude towards Humanity Introduction In1726, Jonathan Swift, one of the best-known realistic writers in 18th century, published his book Gulliver’s Travels which on the surface is a collection of travel journals of a surgeon called Lemuel Gulliver but actually is a work of satire on politics and human nature. In the four incredible adventures, Gulliver’s perceptions are tied closely with Swift’s shame and disgust against British government and even against the whole of the human condition as Richard Rodino says in his book that Gulliver is neither a fully developed character nor even an altogether distinguishable persona; rather, he is a satiric device enabling Swift to score satirical points. The Houyhnhnms are endowed by nature with a general disposition of all virtues. They are rational creatures who have no conceptions of what is evil. They love their brothers and sisters. In their marriages, â€Å"the married pair pass their lives with the same friendship and mutual benevolence that they bear to all others of the same species who come in their way; without jealousy, fondness, quarrelling, or discontent.† (Swift 358) Houyhnhnm treat each other frankly, and never tell lies. â€Å"Friendship and benevolence are the two principal virtues among the Houyhnhnms, and these not confined to particular objects, but universal to the whole race† (Swift 357) Swift tends to seek morality when he finds the evil and corrupting humanity. The pursuit of morality is the only way people can redeem themselves.
